For many TMS members, joining a technical committee is the starting point for involvement in the society. TMS has approximately 35 technical committees covering a broad spectrum of materials science and engineering specialties. Committee members attend committee meetings, engage in discussions, propose symposia topics, volunteer as session chairs, determine JOM topics, and generally form the basis for all society activity in a particular technical area.
Why Join a Technical Committee?

Time Commitment
Varies. Some committee members devote only a few hours per year, attending committee meetings held at TMS conferences. Others use their committee membership as a springboard to further volunteer opportunities, such as organizing a symposium, presenting a paper, becoming a JOM subject editor, or taking on a leadership role.
Requirements
No previous TMS volunteer experience is required to join a TMS technical committee, but all committee members must be TMS members in good standing. An annual review of TMS membership related to committee membership is done each spring. Suspended or inactive membership status is cause for removal from the committee roster.

How to Get Started
Once you have identified the appropriate technical committee, please fill out the Technical Committee Interest Form, providing basic information such as your name, affiliation, and the name of the technical committee you wish to join. A TMS representative will then follow up with additional information for you.
