The Materials Science and Engineering Department at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for Department Manager. The Department’s interests include research, testing, analysis, and development of materials for the nuclear energy industry and expanding efforts in the development and characterization of materials necessary for advanced fossil energy and renewable energy technologies. Current research areas within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at INL include high-performance alloys, advanced testing and characterization techniques, and dedicated performance science. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess the ability to grow existing programs and who can branch out in new directions regarding novel materials deployment in the energy sector. Example areas of interest include composite materials, advanced battery technology, sensors for extreme environments, additive manufacturing, heterogeneous catalysis, emerging and novel processing techniques, or innovative integrated computational materials engineering based approaches to materials development and production. The department manager will have ownership of Advanced Materials strategy and technical leadership, building and growing our team of experts in the Energy and Environmental Sciences. Responsibilities will focus on leading a materials science department with a diverse set of skills and expertise that presently performs applied and developmental research. These efforts will have a visible, long-term impact on the business development and strategic direction of INL's energy-focused mission.
Our ideal candidate will have a strong desire to manage a team of talented and forward-thinking researchers who develop and execute both business and technical strategy. In order to achieve these goals, we anticipate that she/he will have an outstanding technical or programmatic credentials related to advanced materials and materials science or related fields of research and testing.
- A PhD in a relevant engineering or science discipline with 11+ years relevant experience
- A proven research track record in advanced materials science
- The ability to enable and contribute to the publication of ongoing research in high-impact journals by staff members at all levels
- Experience in business development and the ability to win competitive governmental and industrial funding
- Must be a US Citizen
